Finished: Dots & Squares Tunic, Ready for Warmer Days

This tunic for me is now the third thing I've made from Simplicity 2584.

I wore this tunic on Easter and got an unsolicited "I really like that top, Mom" from Annie, who was home from college for the weekend. As I was thinking it looked more like a pajama top than a tunic, I was happy to get this vote of confidence from someone who doesn't dole out compliments lightly. And who would have told me if it looked like a pajama top. (Aren't daughters wonderful that way?!)

Fabric: Gold polka dots on a cream cotton background, from Elliott Berman Textiles, purchased a year ago. The trim is a gold brocade (?) you've seen here and here; I think I have now used up the last of it in my stash.

Pattern Adjustments: I drafted a different exterior facing that didn't have all the curves of the original one. I also took off about a half-inch from the top of the sleeve cap so it would fit smoothly without any gathers.

I used a very thin rope trim from Pacific Trimmings to edge the facing; attached by hand.

I need a new sewing cabinet! The Sauder cheapie folding cabinet finally fell apart and now I'm looking to replace it. I need something that can expand and contract to suit the small area I sew in, and I've been looking at Arrow, Horn, Perfexion, Roberts and Tracey's Tables. Anyone have any opinions on these brands or other suggestions?

What I'm working on now: Gosh, my productivity level has been high lately. While Annie was home I made a retro-seventies shift dress for her (photos to come), I finished my rain cape, and I just made the perfect long summer skirt. I'll try my best to get photos up soon!

I love tunics. The idea of including brocade is very creative - and has given me an idea for a winter kaftan.

Your tunic is lovely and the trim is so pretty. You are right, daughters are wonderful, their honesty keeps us grounded at times and then other times it is a wonderful confidence boost. Can't wait to see your other garments.

How cute, I recognized the trim fabric as soon as I pulled up the blog.

You have really gotten your money's worth out of that pattern! I love your fabric choices. Every time I see one of your fabulous garments, I wish that I were closer to NYC and could avail myself of all the wonderful resources there!

I love the way the two fabrics work together. If Annie likes it, it must be great!! LOL

Re: Sewing cabinet
I've had a Horn cabinet for over 15 years. I bought it as a floor model and it's held up very well over the years.

Fantastic top and what a great use for that brocade. The narrow trim is a lovely edging for it. Comfortable, yet dressy, always nice to have in the closet.

Love the tunic!
I have the Horn 3178 combo cabinet that holds both a sewing machine and a serger and I love it. I've had it since 2003 and it has survived five moves, including two transatlantic ones, without any harm.

I love this tunic - it looks so high end designer glamorous! The polka dot fabric is very lovely and the gold brocade complements it perfectly.

Love the tunic, especially the narrow rope edging on the collar trim! As for sewing cabinets, I splurged on a Horn cabinet maybe ten years ago and love it. Good furniture is absolutely essential when you're sewing!

Very nice! I love tunics in the summer too. I have that C Rowley pattern in my stash but haven't tried it yet.

I love how you mixed circles and squares - very fun!

The small rope trim for accent made a huge impact on the tunic. Love it!

I love the combination of fabrics, you always have creative (but not wacky!) ideas. If it gets the daughter approval you know it must be a winner!

That's a really great idea! I have a dress version of this pattern and it fits great. I'd never considered changing that exterior facing but I like its simplicity a lot. (No pun intended. That comes across really goofy, doesn't it?)

Lindsay, the Horn combo machine/serger is a great cabinet. It'll fold up to nearly nothing. I've had mine since 1999 and have since bought another one for my new Bernina 830. They are dream cabinets. Those folks know how to make them w/out all the bulk. Good luck

Well, that compliment was very much deserved as that is a beautiful tunic. The gold rope trim is a nice touch.
