Time Out for a Sewist Question Meme

My dear friend and former classmate Joanne of Miss Muslin tagged me in the latest meme that's going around. Let's play question-and-answer time!

Which pattern/vintage style have you been thinking about lately? You know I'm not a big vintage person—my lifestyle is too casual for most vintage dresses and jackets. Still, one of my favorite time-wasters is to pore through vintage patterns online. It's especially nostalgic to look at patterns I made when I was a teenager.

What is the one place you want to visit you've never been before? I am heavily traveled in the United States and the maritime provinces of Canada, less so in the rest of the world. I guess if I had to pick a top destination on my long list of places to see it would either be Greece or Italy. My husband recently declared he has no desire to travel, so anybody interested in being my travel partner?

How do you relax? Other than sewing, reading and walking my dog. I love going to movies too. (Last movie seen: Toy Story 3. Loved it!)

What is your favorite holiday/ vacation? Returning each summer to the small town in northern Maine where both my parents grew up and relaxing at our lake house there.

What is/are sewing skills you want to learn/try out? There are a tons of things I still need to try, like making a welt pocket. But seriously, I really want to increase my satisfaction rate with the clothes I've been making for myself lately. Technically they're fine; it's just that when I wear them I feel so "meh" about them. It's such a letdown to sew and sew and then just be blasé about what you make, isn't it?

Can you knit? Crochet? Other crafting talents? Yes, I can knit and crochet though I hate both. I like to embroider and I'm pretty handy with a glue gun. In fact, I can be a very crafty person, given the time. However, I draw the line at scrapbooking and making jackets out of sweatshirts.

What garment/accessory do you wear most often? Silver hoop earrings and a Cartier watch.

How much time do you spend reading blogs (per day/per week)? Before I started working in the city I probably spent thirty minutes a day reading blogs. Now I'm lucky if I get in thirty minutes a week. I do admit that if I'm pressed for time the blogs of people I've met in person get priority.

Your motto/mantra? "Bloom where you are planted." This was on a wall hanging I had in my bedroom in the seventies and it's appropriate given how much my family moved when I was a kid. (I went to three different middle schools and two high schools. No, not military—corporate brat.) Lately I seem to be doing my blooming on the interwebs.

Tagged! I'm going abroad to tag, in no particular order, Uta of Little El, Eugenia and her Fabulous World of Fashion, and Karin of Making the Seam. Play if you can, girls, and no hard feelings if you pass.

Hey Lindsay! I saw that you're interested in going to Italy. I'm traveling with a group of folks in a similar boat (want to travel, no SO to travel with, etc…) we're hitting Florence, Tuscany and Rome in September and there are still a few slots available. Check out the link, and see if that works for you.

You know, whenever I play these meme games where you share a little bit of your background, I only get a couple of comments. Nothing like the sewing posts. Is this because you're embarrassed at how incredibly boring I am and don't want to hurt my feelings? ;)

I like your mantra. I hope you get to go to Italy soon. It is really an incredible country. You will be surprised at the diversity from one end to the other.

I really like your motto/mantra, I could have used it when I was growing up!

You have made some incredible things ,but I know what you mean about feeling "meh" about them. For me I think it's by the time I'm finished with the item I'm tired of seeing it. I remember seeing a Armani cashmere light fall jacket ,what I loved about it was the only detail was the minuscule rolled edge around the border of this collarless jacket. The simplicity made me want to make the jacket, of course the cashmere he used was over $350. a yard and I wasn't going to be able to duplicate that. I still want to find an incredible bargain on cashmere and then I will attempt it.
There should be a sewers trip abroad, maybe just to look at the fabrics in Italy. Florence was always expensive and now I can't imagine what the prices are.,but that's not a reason not to plan a trip maybe for next spring so I can save up for it!
:O)

I'm with you on only having 30 minutes a week to read blogs. It's insane! Sorry you're feeling "meh" about the items you sew. Is it just items you sew for yourself you aren't excited about, or even the clothes for Annie?

I love your responses. You are so NOT boring. I think it is fun to digest the information and understand the poster. I agree it takes guts to post this about yourself, especially your history.

I am a great travel buddy. I travel light, love to walk and eat/drink. How about Susan K's Paris Trip? One major problem I see is the $$$$$$$.Lets work on goal, and save for it......2015.....

Loved your meme - Funny I was going to tag you but thought someone else had already.
I think a sewers trip to Italy (meet in Rome) should be organised for 2011.

Lindsay, you garments are great - who are you kidding? But I can understand the "meh" factor. I enjoy reading your blog and share the time limit factor about reading blogs.

I'm with Joanne about attending Susan's Paris trip and the $$$. Paris is one of my favorite places (well Italy as well).

Hi Lindsay! I finally got home, got over my jet-lag, got my computer working again (it's five years old) and started checking out all the blogging I had missed. I am not sure how this tagging thing works, but I am game to give it a go! Do I just answer all the questions that you answered and then tag some others?

My wonderful teacher would admonish me when I would be too critical of my things. For a reality check, go to the local store where you might purchase something and look at how it's made - on the inside of the lining if you can, and you will be appalled and impressed with how good looking your things are.

The other thing my wonderful mentor would say to me was: "On a galloping horse, they won't notice!"

Karin, yup, that's all you do.
