Please accept my apologies for slacking off on my updates from the garment district. A planned move to relocate my department to the city was postponed and I'm still in suburbia for now. But I'm trying to keep my NYC store information as current as possible—for example, did you know that Paron's is now open on Sundays? That's great news as so few stores in the district keep Sunday hours. Please feel free to email me with any garment district updates of your own, or names of stores you think I should review on this site.

I haven't wanted to do much sewing for myself lately. My plan is to wait until I'm in the NYC office to see what the attire is like there before I buy fabric and pick out patterns. (Plus I feel all pudgy around the middle and I'd love to drop some pounds.) However, daughter Annie is in need of dresses as high school graduation looms on the horizon, so I'll keep the juices flowing by sewing for her.
First up is to make a muslin of this Butterick dress pattern, which, if all goes well, will turn into the white dress Annie can wear for her school's graduation ceremony (the girls wear demure white dresses and the boys wear white dinner jackets). I'm thinking a white eyelet or jacquard fabric for a dress à la Milly. Mood, B&J, Rosen & Chadick, or Paron will be my go-to stores for the fabric and lining.Other than that I'm still working in the suburbs, not much is new with me. The kids are taking midterms now, it's pouring rain here as I write this, I'm sad the Jets lost, but as a former New Orleanian I'm thrilled to see the Saints going to the Superbowl for the first time. (I'll be ordering a king cake for the Superbowl party. Geaux Saints!) Back soon with review of a gold satin tunic for me I'm just putting the finishing touches on now….

Cute dress pattern. It will look fabulous on your daughter!
I love that white dress pattern, it will look cute on Annie
Sigh . . . if I were a bit younger (and had more toned upper arms), I'd be making that butterick dress pattern for myself! Annie will look fabulous!
And Parons is now open until 7pm - Monday thru Thursday! Saw it last Saturday when I was in the city with Elizabeth!
Also Pacific Trims is a lot less crowded on a Saturday afternoon than during the week...who knew?
The Butterick dress would be *perfect* in a white jacquard.
I have a ton of Milly dresses. They just seem to fit me so well. Milly's summer dresses are lined with a very soft cotton. I don't know how, but it doesn't catch or pull the fashion fabric. I was ruminating on this on the drive into work today because I'm going to make a linen dress for summer, and was thinking that I don't want to use a poly lining...
nice dress, white also indicates peace, who ever wear this dress they looks beautiful
I was just looking at the pattern yesterday - very pretty. Back on that whole sorority thing, if Annie rushes and joins a sorority, she'll need a white dress for initiation. You could very well be killing two birds with one stone here. :)
No one would call your a slacker, madame! That dress will look great on Annie. Children are the most wonderful excuse for picking up our needles.
Ooh- I had not seen that pattern before and now I want one for myself- white with the neck and midriff in navy. Or all white. Or both. Sigh. Damn you, Lindsay T, for adding more to my list.
As if I hadn't said it enough, that is one lucky daughter! Good luck with the dress!
Obviously you will have to make it longer than Annie will want if it's to be 'demure'. It's a really cute dress and she can always hem it high after graduation. Eyelet sounds lovely.
I love that Butterick pattern and it will be so nice made up in a white eyelet. Annie is lucky to have such a great Mum who makes her such gorgeous clothes - but I'm pretty sure she knows that!
I love the Butterick pattern. I think dresses where the shoulders are showing is feminine and strong.
I am sure Annie will look stunning.
Cute pattern, but it doesn't read "demure" to me, even with white eyelet. Maybe make it for the graduation dinner? I'm sure it'll look great on your daughter.
I learned about Paron's when I happened to be in the area a month ago. I told the saleslady with the gray bob and glasses that it was wonderful.
I think this is a nice choice for your DD's graduation dress.
Anonymous, Annie's graduation ceremony is outside on a late June morning on what always ends up being the hottest day in the summer. Hence the bare arms. With the high neckline and a skirt that won't be too short (I promise!), I'd say this dress is appropriately demure for the occasion.
I love the dress pattern. Does it need to be white or can you choose. I haven't been to a hs graduation in about umm...20 years. I remember all the girls needed to wear a white dress even though we had ugly poly gowns over it!
My graduation dress was also white, also sleeveless, and also made by my mother. I think this dress is totally classy and I would place it in the "demure" category, too.
I like the white eyelet idea for the demure dress. . .but wonder if have you've considered pique'?
Louisiana folks are besides themselves after the New Orleans Saints' Sunday night win. It is an extended party from this week to Super Bowl all the way to Mardi Gras. IIIIiiiii-Eeeeeeee!
Skitzo Leezra,
Piqué is a fabulous option! Thanks for reminding me.
Cindy,
Yes, they have to wear white dresses. No other colors allowed.
