This year my friend and coworker Karen and I decided that, in effort to keep Christmas costs low, we would make each other a gift, spending no more than $5 on materials. She loves to cook, so—aha!—an apron would be the perfect thing for me to sew. Using denim from my stash and some leftover home dec fabric, I made this easy apron from Butterick 5125. And Karen made me empanadas! If you want homemade Spanish food or boozy rum cakes, Karen's your go-to gal. I can't wait to share these with my family. Yum!

Despite the blizzard we had here last weekend, I managed to get all my holiday shopping done and now I've just got some baking and wrapping to do before Friday. After we open our presents Christmas morning we'll get in the car and drive north to southern Maine to see my sister and her kids and my dad. My 78-year-old father, as I've mentioned here, is suffering from vascular dementia and I don't know if the onslaught of relatives will be a good thing or a bad thing for him. We'll see; fingers crossed.May you enjoy the holidays with family and friends, and get to squeeze in enough sewing to keep you sane. Thank you for visiting my blog in 2009 and I hope you'll stick with me in 2010. Cheers!

Merry Christmas, Lindsay.
I love the picture of Karen! It really says it all and I can see she will love wearing that apron as much as you will love eating the empanadas. I still can't decide about my favourite garment of 2009, but I'm enjoying see everyone else's.
Have fun in Maine!

I don't know what I would rather have--the empanandas or the apron. Being the selfish person I am, I would want both! Happy Holidays to you and your family.

I sincerely hope your visit is enjoyable for your father. I went through this same problem quite a few years ago and it is sad. If he is happy and well cared for this will be all you can ask. Just hug him.
On a lighter note,,,,,your posts are a joy to read. Will look forward to more in 2010.
