I am officially another year older today. I really dislike celebrating my birthday. When Annie was born on the day after my 35th birthday I was like, phew, now I can ignore mine and focus on her birthday instead. But here I am telling the world I'm another year older, so go figure.
Today on my birthday I am thankful for Meredith Vieira's neck. Meredith, for my international readers, is the co-host of the "Today" show, the dominant morning news program in the United States. She turns 56 in December and Meredith looks like a woman in her mid-50s: She is still stunningly attractive but she has wrinkles around her eyes and sagging skin on her neck. Which is all perfectly normal except that so many of our aging celebrities have chosen to turn themselves back into 35-year-olds rather than look their age. And that pisses me off! When did looking your age become such a liability?
A Famous TV Actress who lives in my town is an example of this reverse aging by plastic surgery. She is in her early sixties and everyone knows it, just like everyone knows she went to one of New York's best plastic surgeons a few years ago and had twenty years of aging magically carted away. To run into the Famous TV Actress at the grocery store or a restaurant always causes a jolt—not because she is a celebrity but because she could be mistaken for a woman in her late thirties. Seriously! She's a very nice person in real life but it's just a little freaky that she looks like she could have kids in elementary school.
So I'm grateful for Meredith Vieira's neck and that Meredith is not afraid to look her age on national TV. I always give her a "you go girl" when she wears a v-neck. We aging baby boomers need a role model for aging gracefully and naturally, and Meredith you're my girl.
Speaking of aging baby boomers, you could find them in droves Sunday at "Love, Loss, and What I Wore" at the Westside Theatre. I loved this little play (actually more a collection of monologues) about "matters of the heart and matters of the closet" (New York Times) by sisters Nora and Delia Ephron, who based it on Ilene Beckerman's book of the same title. It's the perfect thing to see with your girlfriends or daughters, especially if you appreciate lines like "Wear Eileen Fisher and you just might as well say 'I give up'" (huge laugh of recognition from the audience).

Hey, I found the perfect embellishment for my blue coat! M&J Trims pulled through for me just like it always does. As soon as I sew it on I'll share photos with you, dear readers. See you later!

Happy, happy day! I choose to celebrate my birthday with a vengeance each year... it sure beats the alternative. Enjoy!
Aging is inevitable. If we are fortunate, we do it. Celebrate it. Embrace it. And have a great day!
Happy Birthday. Enjoy the day.
Happy birthday! You look beautiful and don't change a thing. Have a great day.
And I had a huge laugh about the Eileen Fisher line in the play. I wore her stuff after all three babies were born! Nothing like hiding in a bit of drapey sweater-wear!
Happy Birthday!!! Loved your story on Meredith and the "actress," I agree completely. Every wrinkle that seems to creep up when we sleep only to appear mysteriously in the morning light, is a testament to all the life we've lived. Frankly, I think it's more beautiful then a face that has been botoxed and pulled to oblivion. That said the "actress" is really a nice person and her job is probably the main motivation for all the work she has had done.
Have a great year and live every minute of it,wrinkles or not :O)
Happy Birthday! You look beautiful and so does Meredith :)
Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday my friend! Live, laugh, love, and have a virtual celebratory drink with me- my treat!
Happy birthday!!
Can't wait to see the blue coat trim :)
Happy Birthday! (I'm dying to know who your local celebrity is!!!)
Well said. I don't always like looking at my turkey neck, but I'm not about to turn back the clock. What's the point? My hair is "naturally" highlighted (with gray) because at what point do I stop? Happy birthday and stay young at heart!
Happy birthday! I too appreciate MV's neck and wrinkles. She is aging gracefully and these days that is rare. Isabella Rosselini lives in my town and she is not of the get rid of 20 years ilk either. A pleasure to see her. She is also in her 50's I believe and still beautiful, but not 30 anymore. Just because we are aging does not mean we can't look fabulous!
I am glad you found some trim you're happy with. You made a minimalist coat, but you aren't a minimalist kind of woman. I would be happy with that coat just the way it was, but you clearly weren't.
Happy Birthday!
I agree completely about the loss of the ability of women to age gracefully. Pisses me off too.
Sounds like a great fun play. LOL about the EF comment!
Glad you found trim/embellishment.
Happy birthday!
Happy birthday! Have a great day!
I went to buy new ballet shoes yesterday. And a tall, impossibly thin, busty, plasticy woman was in front of me. When she turned around, I was startled by how fake looked. I think the worst thing about plastic surgey on celebs is we forget what people look like as they age.
I think you are one of the classiest and well put together people I've ever met. So, I'm celebrating your birthday for you!
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday! I'd like to be big enough to say that I'm happy everyone gets to decide whether they resort to surgical or chemical means to look young, but I wish everyone would learn to be happy with how they look, regardless of age.
Just had to add that I remember when my Mom felt really old at 47. I remember telling her that when she's 90 she'll think 47 was really young. I've stopped worrying about getting older because today is the youngest I'm going to be and I'm going to enjoy every minute of it.
Have a wonderful birthday!
Happy Birthday. Celebrate growing older. I increasingly think it is a blessing (consider the alternative) and am totally annoyed at the inability of many cultural icons and part of society to accept aging gracefully.
Glad you found the trim. That is always a bright spot and a joy.
Happy birthday! And I agree, it is very nice to have role models for aging naturally and gracefully.
I loved Beckerman's book; the play sounds just as delightful.
Happy birthday and many more!
Happy Birthday!!! My mom swears sunscreen keeps a woman young (well at least her skin), so I'm going that route and keeping my fingers crossed I have good genes to boot. ;-)
Happy Birthday! Thank goodness for role models that grow old gracefully. Seeing as how plastic surgery isn't something I plan on using in the future, it's nice to have older women remind all of us that growing older can still be beautiful, not something that has to be erased with invasive surgery.
Have a wonderful day!
Happy birthday!!! You look great. Ooooh, I wish I knew the name of the actress.
Happy birthday! Enjoy your day.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
I totally agree with your admiration or Meredith's neck. My neck is much like hers (hey wait, it's better! it's even saggier!)
Seriously, I am all for good grooming and beauty throughout life, but I dislike plastic surgery when it is so extreme. Even when it's well done, it troubles me.
Happy Birthday! Hope you get lots of sewing related gifts!
I think Meredith is a wonderful role model as well, but who knows when the network will tell her "the knife or the job"? Women are under such pressure. It is just not fair.
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday, friend! Don't think of yourself as # yrs old, think of how many friends you've accumulated that treasure your friendship! Wishing a very happy day!
Happy Birthday! You share your birthday with the United States Marine Corps FYI.
I have no clue how old you are, but I can hazard a vague sort of guess based on your kids- I think you're gorgeous and if I can look as great as you do as I get older I'll count myself as super lucky!
Happy Birthday! I feel like I've earned my wrinkles, but it's nice to have role models that look terrific. I do really care about how old I feel. I may not look it, but I feel like I am in my thirties. Look forward to seeing the trimmed coat.
Happy birthday! If surgery could get one's youth back, I might be tempted someday... But it doesn't, does it? It just makes one look like something one isn't. A well-made chanel jacket, of the kind that you make, looks much classier than a streamlined face, anyway!
Happy Birthday!
My MIL is the opposite of Meredith V. She is in her 70s, dyes her hair brown, false teeth, make up and perfume to the hilt, youngish clothes. It puts her in the mid 50s. AND she would kill us if we told our kids that she has false teeth. My 15 year old has the room next to her and figured it out for herself.
Vanity has a price... It's people rolling their eyes behind your back...
Happy birthday and I wish you many more to come. Enjoy your day
Your daughter is in the same grade as my son, and I had him when I was 35, so.....If I look the same age as you, I'm a pretty damn happy chic today! Happy Birthday, and many happy & healthy more to come.
Happy birthday! Enjoy it, make everyone pamper you.
I want to look like that at 56! Happy birthday. You're just as beautiful as this lady. I hope you have a really lovely day and do nice things for yourself.
Happy Birthday. I passed a milestone birthday on Sunday and your blog post really made me smile.
Happy Birthday, Lindsay T. I think you look fabulous!! I turned 64 a few weeks ago and ever since I turned 60, I've let it be known that I do not celebrate birthdays anymore, but I do accept gifts every Sept 29th! It works like a charm. I do miss my waistline, but not enough to do much about it ! I hope you have many more, girlfriend.
Happy Birthday! Meredith is lovely, and you too. Celebrate with some.........new fabric........or another sewing class???? Enjoy your week!
Happy Birthday!
Hope you've had the great day!
Happy Birthday. I once had a job promoting "positive images of older people". I think I failed!
Happy Birthday! I too am an fan of Meredith, and the rest of that crew. They are all having fun as the years add up.
Enjoy your special day.
Happy Birthday!
Anne
Happy Birthday!
Happy Birthday! I love love your blog! I found it by googling "chanel cap toe flats" and your picture is the only picture i can find of the exact pair I have been wanting forever. I love your tips and style and only wish I was a sewer...i guess one day?
Happy birthday!!!
Meredith and I have the same neck!
Happy Birthday!!!
Anxious to see the trim for your coat.
Happy, Happy Birhtday.
Happy, happy birthday. I think it was Lauren Bacall said of her wrinkles that she earned every one and wouldn't change them.
At 69, I have quite a few, and guess what? They are the same wrinkles on my mother's face and my aunts' faces.
Looks like I'm a day late in sending birthday greetings but I hope you had a wonderful day!
Wishing you the very best, and a very beautiful, birthday.
Celebrate in your favourite style. Life IS wonderful, wrinkles and all!
Happy Birthday. I hear ya!
Happy Birthday -- a little belatedly!!
Well, Happy Birthday...I love what Patricia Richardson (Tim Allen's TV wife), said about aging...here she had kids and everything was falling, but she had to have the figure of youth, and she had a pretty good attitude about it - something that she was resigned to in her chosen vocation.
I'm fortunate to have some pretty good genes, and people still can't believe I'm the age I am, but then I don't act my age either. That may help....my advice is don't act your age!!! ;-)
I just discovered your blog and love it, though I rarely sew more than to mend things. Thank you to everyone for your wise thoughts on aging. At age 31, I already feel pressure to look younger. It's nice to be reminded of positive role models and healthy ways of embracing maturity.
Sorry! I'm a little late to the party but wanted to wish you a HAPPYN BIRTHDAY!!!
