Finished: Butterick Chinoise Robe

Butterick 4406, an "unlined, loose-fitting robe with long sleeves, collar, button loop closure and stitched hem."

This robe is proof that I am becoming my mother. She always had a collection of pretty robes. Me, I have two robes to my name: a terrycloth wrap robe from Lands End and a fleece wrap robe from Target. A comfy but entirely utilitarian look. So I'm classing up my act by adding this robe to my wardrobe.

The details:
  • The fabric is some satin jacquard/whatever from my local home dec fabric store. It's machine washable and a little bit slinky but not in a revealing way. I bought fabric here because I was in one of those MUST. HAVE. FABRIC. NOW moods and couldn't wait until my next trip into the city. Will I look like a settee in this robe? Hope not but I don't mind if I do.

  • The contrast collar and cuffs are made out of dark blue denim from Jo-Ann's. I like the contrast of upscale/downscale: The denim keeps it from being too frou-frou. I hand-embroidered a border (stem stitch) on the collar and cuffs.

  • This pattern runs huge, and I mean gigantic. I cut a Medium but I scaled it down to something closer to an XS. And the sleeves run way too long for even someone of my height (5'7").

  • I added inseam side pockets and a loop at the neck to hang it up on a hook. Just follow Butterick's directions for the button loops and use what you'll have left over to make the hanging loop.

  • This is an easy, straightforward pattern. Just watch out for the jumbo sizing.

I hand-embroidered a monogram because, well, every girl should own at least one robe with her monogram on it. I'll go into more details about embroidering this monogram and how to make your own monogram in a future post. (And yes, "Lindsay T" is my online alias and not my real name, though it is a family name and I'll answer to it.)

Other recently finished projects: This past long weekend I made a little tailored vest from BWOF 01/09. "Today" anchor Meredith Viera has been wearing vests lately and they look good on her, so I thought I'd sew one out of some fabric I have in my stash. I'm annoyed at myself because I accidentally made a tiny snip on the lining. Once I get the buttons on and the vest photographed I'll share it with you here.

You are so right--my mother always wore nice robes and her nightgowns always matched! Very funny.
I like that you used denim--nice contrast!
I have been wanting a vest for awhile and can't wait to see your version. I can't decide on fabric.
Did you see the bejeweled black vest in burda 8/09? It is extreme but has me thinking.

Unfortunately I am MY mom and only had a scuzzy robe so I wouldn't have to run around the house early nearly naked...
Your robe turned out gorgeous! I may change my habits if I had a robe like that...

How very chic! I actually have my mom's old velour robe that I used to oogle back in the 80s. She never wore it because back then you saved your nice robes and sleepwear for potential hospital visits!

I should make her a new robe. I think she'd get a kick out of it. Especially if it's as classy as this one.

I have a fantastic selection of robes. My MIL gives me one for Christmas every year. I am particularly fond of the velour robes with embroidery at the yoke - the kind you step into and zip up. In red (NOT!)
I think I'm in the process of making that same vest from January. I'm pretty slow at it, so it may be a while before I have anything finished to show. Anything you want to share on the construction side?

This is so pretty, I'm tempted to make one even though I'm more of a pajamas or get dressed kinda gal. But I can see how you'd feel all diva-esque in one, in a good way

Loves it! You accomplished everything you set out to do! Bet you look like the Queen rolling through your home in this! :)

It does have a fabulous, 1930's vintage feel to it! So chic. I don't think the sateen fabric is upholstery-like. It's perfect for the robe, especially with the *genius* denim trim.

Nice robe! Definitely a step up from Target! BTW, eventually we all turn into our mothers, whether we want to or not!

Very luxurious! I always meant to add some class and make a nice robe, but there's no denying I'm turning into my mother, too! (Funny it doesn't sound so bad when I inmagine dd turning into HER mother...)

Thanks for the vest info. My second set of tubes are a work of art and will be included. I have a buckle, actually 2, somewhere. I bought them for the shorts I made earlier and they were in a pack of 4.
I may get the vest "made" for trying on tonight, before I start the lining.
May I ask a (probably stupid) question about lining this. If I attach the lining everywhere but a place it the bottom to turn it, will it turn? Or does it get hung up at the sleeves? I have a vision of making the vest and making the lining and right sides together attach all around, leaving a vew inches at the bottom to turn it inside out. But I also have a vision of the whole mess getting hung up at the sleeves.
Oh, and wrong UT. I'm'a VOL!, not a Longhorn. Knoxville girl, that is.

That robe fabric, whatever it is, sure looks like silk to me. And adding the monogram, jeepers, doesn't get much classier than that.

What is it about our moms and their robes? We call them robes, but frankly the ones my mom and MIL wore are "housecoats."

Very classy robe. I love the mix of fabrics. Pretty. I am purchasing that pattern this weekend.

Great robe. Next fluffy slippers and martinis from noon? A friend gave me a copy of Ruth Reichl's "Not becoming my mother and other things she taught me along the way". Terrifically moving and funny at the same time.

If I had a robe like that, I would lose my job... because I'd always be late for work from "just 1 more cup of coffee"-itis! It's absolutely lovely!

I would hate to wear that just around the house! It is gorgeous!

Very stylish and classy, not sofa like at all! The denim trim is genius, just the right amount of 'different' to make it modern.

Hate those little snips of the scissors!

Very glam robe, you should drink a martini when you wear it.
