July Giveaway #3: Two Yards of Professional-Grade Muslin

Planning to make a jacket or coat this fall? Then you'll want to enter my third and final July giveaway for two yards of professional-grade unbleached muslin. This is a heavier weight than the muslin you can buy from the fabric chain stores, and it does an outstanding job of accurately mimicking (and predicting) your final garment. FIT and Parsons require their fashion design students to sew with this grade of muslin for their projects. I used this grade of muslin to make my faux-Chanel coat and my faux-Chanel jacket. A tad too heavy for a shirt or blouse, this muslin is perfect for jackets, coats, skirts and many types of dresses. I bought myself some of this good stuff recently and will use it for the muslin of the strapless dress I'll be making my daughter in sewing class.

To enter this giveaway, you must 1) already be a Google Follower and 2) you need to leave me a comment to this post indicating you want to participate in this drawing for the muslin. I will randomly select one winner from the commenters on 7/29/09. The winner will be posted on 7/30/09.

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Congratulations to Crystal of North Carolina, who is the random winner of a sheet of professional transfer paper and tailor's chalk. Crystal, send me an email (my address is at the right) with your home address and I'll stick this in the mail to you.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Where I'd get these tailoring supplies? Many of you have asked me to please share my source for the items I've given away this month. It's Greenberg & Hammer, a supplier of dressmaking notions since 1919. If you can't stop by the store on Eighth Avenue when you're in NYC, visit their web site and download one of their extensive catalogs. G&H is working on getting their products online but you can always call them with phone orders in the meantime.

Wow, you guys really want to go to sewing summer camp! I was a little surprised at the number of comments and emails this post generated, but I guess we all love the idea of sewing with our friends at a relaxing location, like a lakeside camp or conference center. Now I am not saying I'm signing on to organize a sewing camp, because I've organized events professionally and it's A TON of work and I do have a day job I'd like to keep, but I will make some inquiries over the next few weeks into space availability at camps and conference centers and we'll take it from there. Okay?

Have a great weekend everyone!

Oh boy, what timely giveaway! I am planning my first ever coat, for the fall, and was just going through my meagre fabric stash (I'm a beginner sewer) to find something of appropriate weight to make a muslin, since I know I will have to do fit adjustments. I didn't even know they made this in a heavy weight. Please enter me!

Your coat and jackets are phenomenal. I'd love to try my hand at making something as beautiful as a Chanel coat and this muslin would be a step in the right direction. Thanks for the opportunity to enter.

This is another item I need! I'd like to be entered in the drawing also.

And I assume that this is from Greenberg and Hammer also -- I might need to place an order in the meantime. I've got a couple of super-fancy, super-fitted dresses to make, and the chain store muslin just isn't going to be a good stand in for the cotton velvet I'll be using for the bodices. I've been wondering what the heck to use, and it looks like this might be a good choice.

With a coat pattern in the queue this would be an awesome acquisition. I'm in!

I'd also be interested. A coat for me is on my long list of projects for this fall.

Maybe that's why my muslin mockups never felt like they mimiced the final fabric, I used the wrong weight muslin. :O(

Please enter me for the drawing. I don't think that i have used professional grade muslin.

Toss my name into the hat!

I need some heavier-weight muslin for a winter coat project. Thanks!

And I am game for a sewing camp too, but I refuse to go if we have to have swimming buddies in the lake. That really annoyed me at summer camp as I was a very good swimmer.

Enter me in please! This muslin is so much more professional than using old sheets!

Every breaking moment I am on my sewing machine creating some apparel, or accessory, I love to sew. One day I hope to have my own little boutique, and I would love to be the recipient of any gift thats offered in the line of fabric or fabric accessory. Thanks for the invitation to win.

I think, I entered. I'm not sure. I tried entering before but might have failed. How do I know that I entered the contest?

Have you any thoughts on where the sewing camp would be?

I've been to two ASG sewing retreats--it's like a little pieace of heaven.

To Anonymous who left a lengthy comment about muslin: I'm more than happy to post comments from readers who disagree with me and I readily admit I can be wrong. I have not had the benefit of attending FIT classes (yet) and I get most of my information from my contacts in the garment district, sewing friends and educators, books, etc. But I do ask that readers who post critical comments at least do so using a profile. I'll be happy to post your comments again in their entirety if you want to own up to them.

Put me in the drawing for the muslin. AND...I'm in for the sewing camp! There are lots of great conference type places in New England near lakes etc. Or upstate New York. There's a place in Vermont called Basin Harbor Club that bares looking into also. Thanks for doing the leg work on this and for coming up with the idea.

After reading your list of must haves for the retreat, I thought of Chatham Bars Inn at Chatham on Cape Cod. It has everything you mention but is on the ocean not a lake and is pricey. Other than that it's great!
