Here I go again, churning out another jacket to wear with jeans at work. It's hard to tell from this photo that this one is made out of pale gray satin because it looks so matte here. Should have used the flash, I guess.
As I was making this pattern, Simplicity 2868, I had a sinking feeling that it was going to be another wadder. At various stages I thought the fit was awkward, the sleeves were weird, the neckline was too high, etc. Typically with all these problems I'd stop midstream and cut my losses, but some strange force compelled me to see this one through. And I'm glad I did because I really like it. The fabric is a stretch satin, and it was a pleasure to work with (plus it's machine washable). I wore this jacket to work yesterday and was amazed at how comfortable it is to wear. Seriously, I want lycra in all my fabrics from now on.
Here are the technical details:
- Simplicity 2868, satin fabric from my stash, contrast binding striped cotton from Ebad Fabrics in NYC, and silver shiny disk buttons from a button store not far from my house that I won't name because you'll hate me for all the money you'd spend there. (I curse Nancy K [who has a new blog, BTW] for introducing me to this shop because you can't get out of there for less than $50 a visit.)
- I made the shorter-length jacket and cut the sleeves at 3/4 length largely because I didn't have enough fabric for longer sleeves.
- I omitted the center back seam because there was no need for it. (The pattern calls for one so you can add a cute little button tab at the waist, but I hate sitting all day with a button pressing into my back.)
- Satin like this one does not need to be lined, so I did an abbreviated Hong Kong finish on all the seams. I like how this looks but I think adding a lining is faster. If you make this pattern think about incorporating a lining, which you'll have to do on your own since it's an unlined jacket.
- My design touch was adding two more rows of buttons to the front. I think creating a stronger vertical line like this is more slimming, too.
- I got out my Reader's Digest New Complete Guide to Sewing and read up on collars. I used their tip on getting a perfect collar point: Double-thread a needle, knot the end, and insert needle through the wrong side at the point, between the seam; pull the needle and thread through to the other side to turn the collar. This worked so much better than my usual poking and jabbing.
- This pattern went together very quickly and can be made up super-fast, depending on how you're finishing the seams. I can see making it again in a warmer fabric for the fall.
Seriously, how do magazines get good flat shots? I placed the jacket on a white sheet, which I later erased in Photoshop, and then I fussed and fussed with the wrinkles that kept cropping up no matter how I posed it. Plus the dog kept walking on top of it.
A detail shot of the pseudo-Hong King finish on the seams. My jacket is very snazzy on the inside but this adds a lot of time to a garment. Not for speed sewists.••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Coming soon: I need to do a wrap-up to my post where I ranted about Jo-Ann Fabrics; plus I'll be previewing a wonderful new book on how to look great, Steal This Style by Sherrie Mathieson. Enjoy your weekend!

I LOVE IT!!!! In the pattern picture,I thought the buttons looked too high and could make the jacket look like "baby on board"ish in real life. But you lowered the buttons and this jacket is stunning! Love the color. Another great job Lindsay.
I think this one is my favorite of your recent projects. It looks incredible! I love the extra buttons, you've taken it to a whole different (more awesome) level than the original. I also think the color is absolutely smashing on you, you look fabulous in it. I'm so jealous of your mad sewing skills!
Another great work jacket! I really love this color which is very flattering on you.
Great jacket, I'm glad you saw it through to the end! Great tip on turning points, gotta file that away for future use!
Great jacket! It looks fabulous on you. What is so pseudo about those HK seams? They look pretty real to me. I love the fabric you chose for them. You are so right. I have always felt it takes longer to do HK seams in a garment than a lining. I can see this being a real workhorse pattern that can go year round.
I really like the jacket.
Beautiful! The color is great on you.
I love your jacket. Seeing the inside of your jacket and the pretty insides of clothing of other bloggers is inspiring me to do a better job of prettying up the inside. I can't wait for your book review.
Your jacket is fabulous! Looks great on you!
I LOVE that jacket! It is so cute on you. Of course now I am a little cross because now I think I "need" that pattern. (to join the other 999 patterns around here)
Fabulous job! I love the extra buttons and of course, the contrast HK finish.
Absolutely gorgeous! And I ADORE the seam finish!
What a great jacket, it looks fantastic on you.
That turned out fantastic! I love the seam bindings.
"Plus the dog kept walking on top of it."
Hahahahahahaha! Snort! Welcome to my life. The only way I have ever been able to get a decent flat shot is to press the he** out of the garment first, then put it on the ground, then airbrush the s*** out of the wrinkles that appear anyway!
And keep the dog out of the room.
:)
Fabulous jacket...and you can't have too many! Especially when they are comfy as well. Love the inside HK finishing - very chic.
You could not possibly look any cuter in this jacket! I love it.
This looks great, amazing how changing the fabric transforms this into a high end sporty look. I love it and the insides look amazing too.
Very cute jacket - nice pose too!
Great jacket. I love it. I really need some casual jackets for spring. Sorry you love the button store so much. It's a lot further away for me, so I can't just drop in to browse. They are great buttons though.
The two extra rows of buttons makes a huge difference. Thanks for the tip. I love the pointed collar tip too! Never would have thought of it.Thanks.
I totally agree with your button design. Really cute jacket.
You're so funny about those photos! Photoshop seems like such a cool program to have. Anyway...awesome jacket!!! Love those double rows of buttons. And yeah, the Hong Kong finish is very elegant, but linings are the way to go to get it done quick. I mean, it wouldn't seem that way but it is.
Your Hong Kong finish makes the jacket very professional looking. It makes the jacket look so expensive when it's taken off.
Very nice.
Gorgeous!!!
The jacket looks great. Your design changes were subtle, but very functional! That's one of the joys of sewing, isn't it?
Looks great! I love the seam finishes - very chic!
Beautiful. The finish really is so cute with that fabric.
This is gorgeous....I love following your 'jacket journey'!
And I appreciate that you took the time to make the inside as lovely as the outside.
Love your seam finish! Also love the part about the dog walking on the jacket as you tried to flat photograph it. LOL
You look outstanding in your "too cute" new jacket!
Gorgeous included the Hong Kong seam finish.
Wow! Wow! Wow! It is so nice to see this one made up! Love your extra touches especially the binding that you used for the HK finish! Simply lovely!
Cute, cute jacket. You button addition is BRILLLIANT. It really adds a lot.
BTW -- love your blog! So glad that I stumbled across it (thanks to Bunny!) I knew when I saw how much you love B & J that I would be right at home here! Even though I am from the South and only get to NYC a couple of times a year, B & J is always on my list. That and Tender Buttons!
Cissie
I love the look of this jacket on you. The HK seams are a beautiful detail.
Lindsay,
Do you know of a good button online store that you would recommend? Thanks!
Very nice looking jacket!
I'm with you on Hong Kong seams - they're as much work as a lining!
Wow, that jacket is soooo cute! You look great in it and if I saw that in a store I would snatch it up! Bobbie
U look great! Fabulous job! Love it :)
Are you secretly the Countess from Housewives of NYC?
To Sheri:
Why yes, I am the countess. Lindsay T is my alias. But let's keep this our little secret...
Luann
This looks so much better on you than the envelope!
Wow, that is just fabulous! I love it, and I love it on you! I love the fabric you used for the HK finish too.
Gee a bit carried away with enthusiasm huh? but really the project is just so nice.
The dog comment is so cute. My cats think that when I put garments down to flat photo, it is really and invitation for them to come check out the new bed. Of course, then there are more wrinkles, and cat hair too.
It's gorgeous and you look terrific in it! I love it!
