Notions Shopping in the Garment District: Steinlauf & Stoller

Steinlauf & Stoller is a notions and tailoring supply store for experienced sewists who've had their training wheels off for awhile. This long and narrow space contains virtually everything you need to create tailored and RTW-looking garments. Just ask if you can't find what you're looking for.

[Note: Please visit my web site Shop the Garment District for the most up-to-date information about fabric and trim shopping in the Garment District.]

If you're an advanced sewist who knows her tailoring supplies, you'll probably think you've died and gone to heaven at Steinlauf & Stoller. They've got boning, horse hair, specialty interfacing and muslin, all kinds of dressmaker rules, ginormous spools of threads, zippers of every variety, and much, much more. You can tell this is the place the pros go to.

On the other hand, me venturing in there was a little like sending a 10-year-old with a history report due into a college library. There is a whole world of dressmaking supplies out there you don't tend to learn about in your high school home ec class or buy at your local Hancock's or JoAnn's. Fortunately, the staff at Steinlauf & Stoller is patient and can probably guide you in the right direction. Even if you aren't looking for anything in particular it's worth peeking your head in here just to expose yourself to all the possibilities.

Need snaps on a garment? Steinlauf & Stoller will professionally set your snaps while you wait. The woman on the right was having snaps added to the western-style shirt she had made.

I love your posts about stores in NY's Garment district. I've only been able to make it there once, but I am hoping for a return trip in the fall. When I do make it back, I'll be able to use my time wisely because I'll know exactly which stores to visit, thanks to your posts.

It is really the best store! So very old time garment district. This is the best place for pattern making tools.

I am so glad your blog exists! I really need some lightweight hymo and can't find what I want locally. I called S&S, gave a description and he told me he'll ship it out today.
(I've been in the store before and I knew they had it. I just couldn't remember the name of the store.)
Thanks!!
