A Wadder Dress Gains New Life as a Summer Tunic

A tunic sees the light of day after languishing for three years as an ugly dress.

This tunic started out as a dress about three years ago, and it was my first reentry into sewing after not doing any garment construction (for myself) in about 20 years. My goal was to make a simple chemise dress to wear during the summer and I failed miserably. It was just an unflattering, ill-fitting lumpy mess.

But I kept it anyway, and when I pulled it out of the closet a couple of weeks ago DD said "I like that!" and asked if I would remake it for her. No, but it was time to see if could finally do anything with it for me. So I:

• chopped it off to tunic length
• reworked the neckline so it was a little more graceful
• narrowed the sleeves and reduced the width of the sleeve bands so they looked less like batwings
• made tunic vents at the bottom of the side seams
• slimmed the side seams so it was a little less boxy
• added the lace details to the front of the tunic and the sleeve bands

And there you have it, a casual tunic for the summer. I'm basically happy with it and pleased it could be resurrected after three years of life as a wadder.

Pattern: a vintage Vogue dress from the 80s that I purchased from LanetzLiving. (Vogue 8346)

Fabric: steel-blue cotton home dec print from Calico Corners and white linen from Fashion Fabric Club; cotton/poly lace from my nearby mom-and-pop fabric store.

Here's a closeup of the lace details on the front and on the sleeve bands. On the front it's basically just two strips of lace sewn side by side and then crossed by four bands of lace.

Congratulations- you saved a wadder! The tunic looks so cute and easygoing, and the lace is lovely.

And in regards to your question; I'm most definitely human, just not easily amused:-) (with with my sewing, that is)

Wow - Great save!!! As a dress, I don't think it would work, but you nailed it! It looks like it will very cool for the summer.

Wow, I commend you on your willingness to revive a wader! My April wader is already in the trash (sans the zipper). Very cute result.

Precious on DD! This top was made for the white pants she has on with it. You pulled off a great save, Lindsay.

Is the moral of the story,"Never REALLY throw out a wadder. Just hide it for a while"?

Old wadders never die, they just...what?

Nice save, Lindsay. I want to see you model your clothes...come on...the rest of us do.

Well you're very clever! I can never manage to save wadders. It's perfect with white pants. (somehow I deleted my original post...wierd)

I'm thinking it's not going to be any scarier than the pictures I've posted of myself wearing the stuff I've made. Probably less. So get with it!

What a great save turning a wadder into a winner!

What were you thinking? Why would you make that awful dress in the first place? You're lucky it became a wadder. The tunic is one thousand times better than the dress. The top will look great with skinny white jeans like your daughter wears.
