My teenage daughter models this Textile Patterns Santa Monica top I made for myself (the excess fabric is pinned in the back).
I can't decide if this top is more seventies or eighties in look. The silhouette is seventies but the chain print and color seem more eighties to me.
At any rate, this is the basic Textile Patterns Santa Monica top that I've made before. It gets an A+ for whipupability—it really can go together in about an hour. I customized this top by lengthening it by about four inches and by adding a sash and wide belt loops. Twin-needle stitching around the edges.
The poly jersey fabric comes from Metro Textile in NYC. I thought it was so dated-looking that it was ready for retro status. I was heartened to see chain prints show up this season in Tory Burch's and Milly's collections, and in Banana Republic's new Monogram line.
In fact, Tory Burch shows a chain-print tunic with sequins in the middle of the chains. I wanted to update this fabric by doing the same thing, and I got really good advice on PatternReview about how to go about doing so. I even bought the sequins. But when I realized how much time it would have taken to sew each sequin on by hand, I said fuhgedabout it: I've got too many other sewing projects ahead of me!

I like this top and the sash. The sequins you can save for something else (and that's coming from someone who LOVES sparkle!) I just realized last night, nearly all the clothes I have made have some kind of sparkle somewhere :-)
Very cute top! Love that fabric!!!
Lindsay, thanks for the kudos on my Rosy Santa Monica Tee. Now isn't this the best pattern? I haven't gotten sick of it yet, and there are so many other t-shirt patterns that I own that just need to be explored.
Anyhow, I love your rendition. I want to see it on you some day. Work that tripod, girl, for a little self-photography!
Very cute top, the sash adds so much.
Cute top, Lindsay. Now you should try a BWOF top.
Great top! I had some of this fabric also and made a tee. It's very comfortable isn't it?
Ooh I have the same fabric languishing in my stash, I love it with that 70's kind of vibe, your top looks great - even if you are being just like a magazine and using a different model and pins!!
Oh, how I remember all that chain fabric but yours is a definite updated version and looks tres cool! Nice touches with the sash and loops. I have never made myself a simple tee and you gals are so inspiring me. That pattern could be the one as I like the shape of the neckline a lot.
