Fabric Stores in the Garment District

Here are all the fabric stores in the garment district that I've visited and written reviews of so far (updated 06/09):

A.K. Fabrics: One of the better stores on W. 39th. Excellent prices on basics like denim, cottons, silks and wools. Great customer service.

B&J Fabrics: If you need to create a gown for the red carpet and money is no object, this is the store for you. Absolutely stunning luxury fabrics.

Chic Fabrics: One of the few stores open on Sunday. Lots of shiny polyester but there are some good finds here.

Metro Textile: Best for poly/lycra print knits; sometimes you can find a decent silk or wool in the store. (Not open on weekends)

Mood Fabrics: Made famous by "Project Runway," Mood has it all, including a home dec department. Three floors of lovely fabric, everything you could imagine, even leather. Very reasonable prices on interfacing, linings and professional-grade muslin.

New York Elegant Fabrics: Another large store with a little bit of everything. Wonderful faux furs and other novelty fabrics, like quilted nylons for jackets.

Paron Fabrics: A favorite of fashion sewists who appreciate the well-labeled bolts (fiber content and designer or manufacturer). Paron's Annex is the side room where all the fabrics are 50% off. The staff is helpful and always generous with their cuts. Kwik-Sew and Burda patterns sold here plus the latest edition of Burda World of Fashion.

Rosen & Chadick Fabrics: A garment district staple know for its outstanding customer service. Gorgeous custom silks and necktie twills, cotton prints, wools, shirtings, laces, velvets, brocades and more.

Spandex House: Dig around and behind all that shiny spandex are some quality poly/lycra and cotton knits at excellent prices. Prints are on the first floor, solids are on the second. A major supplier of knit fabrics; you may recognize some manufacturer names in the selvages. Get your swimsuit fabric here.

Note: If there is a store you think I should visit, please send me an email.
